On April 6th of this year, the Crown Plaza Hotel in Asheville, North Carolina is hosting a very especially fun and awesome event. The pageant is organized by a nonprofit advocacy and activism organization and currently seeking for contestants to compete at the event.
The Ms. Wheelchair North Carolina (MWNC) organization will showcase and demonstrate women in the region that rely on wheelchairs to accomplish their daily mobility needs and requirements. Aeroflow Healthcare is well established in the southeast as a mobility expert of premier service and product. Naturally this pageant is of interest to us and peaked curiosity around the team especially the mobility department. The event will feature women, possibly Aeroflow patients, that will be judged based on accomplishments since they first required use of a mobility device, communication skills, as well as motivation and creativity. Application deadline was March 1st with the event quickly approaching and a good turnout on contestants.
Another goal of the event, besides the fun factor of course, is the idea of raising awareness in regards to local public policy makers and elected officials as well as on a state level. Housing and employment issues as well as socio economic issues need to be addressed. The winner of the pageant can be looking forward to becoming the official spokeswoman of MWNC for the disability community throughout the entire state and represents our beautiful state at the national Ms Wheelchair pageant.

Ms. Wheelchair NC
Thursday, March 7th, 2013December: Sophie Article
Tuesday, December 4th, 2012 At Aeroflow Healthcare, we have been providing durable medical equipment services to the Southeast Region for over a decade. We are locally and family owned which allows us to have more of a personal level of patient care. There has been much growth and many new therapies and services added over the years in order to better meet the needs of our community. Along with Mobility, Oxygen, and CPAP therapies, we now provide services through www.CheapCPAPSupplies.com, medications through Aeroflow Pharmacy and Readyvetmeds.com, and Negative Pressure Wound Therapy.
Through www.CheapCPAPSupplies.com, we offer all the major brands of CPAPs, BIPAPs, Masks, and all other related accessories at low prices. This is a perfect option for patients in the community and across the country in need of equipment to treat sleep apnea but are uninsured or who have high deductibles. As always, we work directly with our patients and their medical providers to ensure they get the sleep apnea treatment needed even during difficult economic times. At www.CheapCPAPsupplies.com, patients are able to contact us through the website or over the phone to place orders or get customer support 24/7.
Also available as of this year, is our Aeroflow Pharmacy. Through the pharmacy, patients can receive all medications, with exception to controlled substances. We work with most major insurances, including Medicare and Medicaid. Our pharmacy provides patients the option to have medications filled on site at our store front, which is located at our main office on Sweeten Creek Road, or to have the medications sent directly to our patient’s homes.
Nearly 65% of households in the United States own a pet; Aeroflow Pharmacy recognized this need and now provides pet medications through www.readyvetmeds.com. Readyvetmeds.com offers products covering all stages of a pets life including ear and eye, flea and tick, dental care, joints, pain, pet food, skin and coat, and vitamins. Pet owners can also find training aids, toys, treats, and more. The items are frequently found on sale. The ordering of these items is easy and delivery is quick.
Lastly, our most recent addition to Aeroflow therapies and services is Negative Pressure Wound Therapy. The wound pumps assist in healing wounds more quickly and cleanly. They are primarily used for patients coming out of surgery or suffering from bed sores or diabetic ulcers. As with our other services, we work with most major insurances and make all the necessary arrangements with our patient’s medical providers and home health agencies to ensure quality treatment.
Through this growth, we have opened more offices across North Carolina and Spartanburg, SC in order to provide more accessibility to our patients. We are very excited about providing these new services to the patients in our community and we look forward to providing more to our community in the future.
Power Chair Football
Monday, December 3rd, 2012If you think that being in a powerchair is going to be the end of your athletic career, you are incorrect. Powerchair Football, also known as Power soccer is a competitive team sport for people with disabilities who use power wheelchairs. The game is played in a gymnasium on a regulation basketball court. Two teams of four players use powerchairs equipped with footguards to attack, defend and spin-kick a football in an attempt to score goals.
Power soccer was first played in France in the 1970’s and soon spread across the globe which spurred the creation of the FIPFA(Federation International Power Football Association). The players are required to use a powerchair with 4 or more wheels with a maximum speed of 6.2mph. The referees are required to inspect the players’ speed before each match and make sure they have the necessary foot guard and lap belt. The popularity of power soccer has led to a world cup which was first held in Tokyo in 2007 and is held every four years in a different location.

Power Soccer: Overcoming the Odds
Monday, November 26th, 2012By: Madeline Jaekle
With the rapid advances in medical technology, presently, we see an overwhelming chance for people stricken by health hardships to overcome the related obstacles with greater and greater success. This is especially true for those individuals struck by severe immobilizing illnesses, such as spina bifida, a life long battle starting at birth or paraplegia caused by degenerative diseases like multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy, or cerebral palsy. These diagnoses once indicated a bleak future with little chance for the individual afflicted to ever be able to participate in the rejuvenating physical activities we all enjoy that require the use of the entire body. This bleak future, however, is quickly becoming a thing of the past.
With the help of power scooters and other powered mobility devices, such as those provided by Aeroflow Health Care, individuals now have the chance to participate in sports and games that many thought they could not. One of the fastest growing examples of this is the growing trend of power soccer.
Played indoors, power soccer allows those stricken by paralysis to feel the rush of a high paced soccer match, despite their inability to use the lower or upper half of their body. Power soccer allows individuals who suffer with mobility problems to regain their since of power and control as they come together as a team to enjoy the sport of power soccer.
The players of power soccer use modified wheel chairs to direct the soccer ball up and down the court to their desired goal. Power soccer has gained so much notoriety and popularity that recently power soccer players have organized an array of power soccer tournaments across the country.
Power soccer is the first example of a power wheelchair being modified and designed specifically to accommodate a competitive team sport. Played indoors, power soccer uses a modified playing field and ball to conduct the match. For power soccer players who have little use of their upper body, powered wheel chairs are a precious piece of equipment that allows them to enjoy the experiences many people take for granted.
The modified power wheel chairs used in power soccer use state of the art technology that allows power soccer players to have speed and agility that may in fact match or rival that of their physically capable counterparts. Power soccer tournaments go all the way to the national level and there is no signs that power soccer popularity will be fading any time soon. For power soccer players, power wheel chairs, allow them to regain a piece of life that many power soccer players afflicted by immobilizing diseases believed to be lost forever.
Overcoming Hurdles For Powerchair Users!
Wednesday, November 21st, 2012As healthcare has evolved over the last several centuries, human beings have widened the focus of healthcare as well. Where once the focus of medical advancement was strictly in preserving and extending human life, improving the quality of the lives medical inquiry has extended has become the new tangent of the ever growing healthcare market. Where once the side effects of aging and degenerative diseases would leave a person bedridden for the rest of their life, the wheelchair emerged to assist those who could no longer ambulate effectively. As the technology boom of last 50 years push forth innovation, these human powered machines have become electrically powered machines. Yet, there are still hurdles out there in order to return people to the freedom they experienced as fully ambulating people. One of these hurdles for power wheelchairs is the dreaded stair.
Churchill had Hitler. Batman had the Joker. Power Wheelchairs have… Stairs? That is right. For anyone who has ever experienced a power mobility device in its various forms, you know there is nothing more formidable to this device than stairs. Yet, this is all about to change. According to an article posted on CNET.com titled “Stair-climbing wheelchair turns wheels into legs,” a team of Japanese researchers from the Chiba Institute of Technology unveiled a wheelchair that can ascend stairs. This power wheelchair is wired with a bevy of sensors to size up the height and depth of each stair. These sensors, coupled with a series of hydraulic systems attached to the all four wheels, allow for the chair to lift each tire up and over the stair the chair is trying to ascend.
The implications drawn from this new innovation are truly remarkable. The greatest potential of a product like this is the elimination of the side costs associated with having a power wheelchair. Side costs of owning a power wheelchair are not always emphasized by sales people, but are essential to meeting the greatest potential freedom for the customer. These side costs include ramps to get inside and outside of a home, lift chairs to get people up and down stairs if they have a two story home, and even moving from a two story home to a single story living space in order to facilitate a power mobility device. No longer would people be limited to just the ground floor. A wheelchair, like this “stair climbing” wheelchair, would eliminate the need for these supplementary devices and contraptions.
If you are expecting this cost saving machine to be in stores soon, your expectations should be tempered a little bit. The prototype unveiled at the Chiba Institute of Technology was merely a “proof of concept” vehicle. Commercial production of these machines will not be seen until a true prototype can be constructed, patented, and tested to meet necessary safety requirements. But that should not completely temper the excitement associated with the potential of this development. It is one more “step” toward providing people with conditions that limit their mobility with the ability to live a life with the freedom of a completely ambulatory person.
