Making a Difference with CPAP

Monday, February 21st, 2011

My name is David Schneider.  I have worked in numerous departments at Aeroflow Healthcare, Inc., including Patient Care and Mobility.  During my time as a Patient Care Representative, I helped our patients overcome sleep and respiratory issues, such as Obstructive Sleep Apnea and Hypoxemia.  During one encounter with a patient, I was explaining the use of CPAP therapy to help alleviate the symptoms of OSA.  The patient told me that he had been unable to get a good night sleep for the last 10 years of his life!  I was in awe of his situation and I envisioned what my life would be like if I was unable to sleep at night.  I notice the effects of sleeplessness after one night of insomnia, such as feeling groggy and having a depressed mood.  It is hard to imagine what life would be like without sleep.

After listening to the patient’s situation, we discussed CPAP therapy; the only reliable treatment of OSA, aside from significant weight loss or other lifestyle modifications.  The patient agreed to try the CPAP therapy to treat his symptoms of Obstructive Sleep Apnea.  A few weeks passed and I spoke with the patient again.  He was elated by the success of the CPAP therapy and told me he had finally been able to get a good night sleep for the first time in 10 years!  I felt extremely grateful to be able to help this patient whose life was forever changed due to Aeroflow’s commitment to helping our patients lead more productive lives.  It is stories like these that underscore the importance of the job that we do on a daily basis.  I am proud to be part of a team that is so dedicated to helping the lives of our patients.

Put The Caffeine Down and Nobody Gets Hurt

Wednesday, September 8th, 2010

It seems one of the chief complaints of most American adults is lack of energy. Between the growing demands and responsibilities of work, family and personal, folks are finding themselves reaching for a variety of options to help keep the pace. Typically, it’s the tried and true liquid form, coffee, with the promise of the caffeine content providing a boost.

To this end, caffeinated products have skyrocketed in sales and popularity. These so-called, “energy drinks”, just a few years ago gave Red Bull a run for its money.

But at what cost? Experts warn too much caffeine doesn’t exactly do the body good in the long run. Regardless, caffeine ends up being a short term fix to an assumed long term problem.

That brings us to a softer, gentler, yet potentially much more powerful option. It has been used since the beginning of time. It’s good old-fashioned . . . air.

That’s right. It turns out that a lot of folks lack energy because they’re not consistently getting air when they sleep. These particular folks have Obstructive Sleep Apnea, (OSA), and many haven’t even been diagnosed nor realize they have it.

OSA is a sleep disorder characterized by abnormal pauses in breathing or instances of abnormally low breathing, during sleep. Each pause in breathing, called an apnea, can last from a few seconds to minutes, and may occur 5 to 30 times or more an hour.

Aeroflow Healthcare can assist a person who is diagnosed with OSA. They may be prescribed a CPAP machine, a device that provides Continuous Positive Airway Pressure, (CPAP), which forces and keep the airway open.

The result? Better sleep which means better energy the next day. And since CPAPs contain zero caffeine, experts agree this is much better than grabbing more coffee or energy drinks.

So if you or someone you know complains about excessive lack of energy and happen to be overweight, snore, and drowsy throughout the day, talk to your doctor about getting tested. Your energy may be restored via CPAP therapy versus caffeine . . . and nobody gets hurt!
