Portable Wheelchair Ramps

portable wheelchair rampsPortable wheelchair ramps provide access to areas where a wheelchair or mobility scooter could not normally go. These ramps can be used over barriers such as steps, curbs, interiors of vehicles and door thresholds. The best feature of all is that you can pick them up and take them with you.

Sturdy materials such as aluminum, fiberglass or reinforced plastic should be used in the manufacturing of wheelchair ramps. They must be rust-resistant, lightweight yet durable. Portable wheelchair ramps must have non-skid treads and bumper guides for safety, and must be able to support weights from 400 to 800 pounds.

Be sure the ramp you buy has a minimum carrying capacity exceeding your wheelchair’s weight plus your weight. Some portable wheelchair ramps are designed for use with unoccupied wheelchairs. Choose a portable ramp that is designed to carry the wheelchair with someone in it.

Portable wheelchair ramps can extend up to 10 feet long. They should lock securely when in use, and either fold, roll up, or retract for ease of storage on a wheelchair or in a vehicle. Wheelchair ramps should have edge protectors. This will prevent the user from falling off the side. They should also have a level end platform so that it’s easy for the wheelchair to transfer from the ramp to another surface.

When choosing a ramp, you have to assess your exact needs. Perhaps you only need a simple one to get you across a curb or step. Or perhaps you need one that will allow you to access a vehicle like a van. You must also consider its durability and quality.
